Neuroscience of Wisdom, Resilience and Well Being

Abstract

Exciting advances in neuroscience have taken place during the past decade.

A number of them relate to a better understanding of neuropsychiatric diseases. Equally important progress is also being made in our knowledge of the neurobiology of positive states and traits including well-being, resilience, and wisdom.

Based on neuroimaging, genetic, and animal studies, specific brain regions and neurotransmitters have been identified as being critical to the development of these characteristics. In foreseeable future, it may become possible to use behavioral and biological techniques  to enhance positive traits and states in people suffering from specific neuropsychiatric disorders.
